Why do I find it difficult to balance creating my art and finding the time to focus on my business?
Your desire to focus on your art is not uncommon. It is difficult for a businessperson to accomplish everything they need in their business. Determine your needs, focus and goals, and decide how to set aside time to accomplish your business needs including marketing, selling and finding opportunities.

VISUAL ARTISTS

How do I get into a gallery?
This question is frequently asked. You need to determine which galleries represent and sell your style of artwork. Make sure there is a "match" before you even pursue a gallery. Do some research on the gallery and determine when and what process they use to evaluate and accept new artists.

How do I find a market for my work?
As a fine artist, always create your art and then find your market. It is sometimes difficult to decide where you believe your art fits in. Do research on the Galleries and numerous market opportunities in your area. Also seek out additional opportunities wherein your art may fit.

What do I need to do before I enter a trade show?
You need to do some research on your market and determine that the show you are thinking of participating in will benefit you. We recommend that you find out about their audience, talk to artists that have previously participated in the show and that you walk the show prior (if possible) to your signing up. Should you decide to participate, you will need to consider what you will present, your booth presentation, marketing materials, pricing and certainly not forget to put together a plan that will consider how you will make money!

MUSICIANS

I have just moved to a new area. How do I break into the freelance music scene?
Join the American Federation of Musicians Local in your new area. Once a member, the Union there will provide you with a membership directory, and possibly a listing of the contractors who hire musicians for the area's performing ensembles.
  • Contact successful musicians who play your instrument.
Ask if you can play for them. Some may be more receptive if you offer to pay for a lesson. This will help musicians in the area get to know you and your playing ability - you will also probably learn something from them!

  • Send your resumé to area contractors.
While it is a good idea to send your resumé, be aware that contractors get hundreds of resumés from musicians. To find new talent, they instead often rely on recommendations from established musicians to help fill their ensembles. Although you are in competition with others who play your instrument, these colleagues are also those most likely to recommend you, and can be your greatest allies.
